Navtex is both a GMDSS component and the world-wide navigational warning service.
Navtex basic functions:
To
provide transmission of MSI (Maritime Safety Information) in English to
the coastal sea area on frequency 518 kHz. Shore- based stations
transmitting information are working according to fixed schedule and
each broadcast contains all necessary information.
Subject to the resolution of the Helsinki conference of the Baltic and Barents Sea states it was decided to re-establish the transmission of Navtex messages in Estonia from 01.04.1998. Navtex messages are transmitted to cover the Navtex F-area (previously U-area) of the Baltic sea. Terrestrial telex messages from the Swedish Maritime Administration are being relayed via Suurupi transmission station to the Baltic area.internationally approved Suurupi transmission station performs its regular functions in the area designated by IMO.
